About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Jiu jitsu is based upon the belief that a smaller, weaker person can defend themselves against lager opponents through properly applied leverage and technique. With time, our students will learn to apply numerous types of joint manipulations, chokes, and muscle slicing submissions for the purpose of stopping an attacker or opponent.

An inclusive self-defense discipline that promotes body confidence while improving overall health and fitness through aerobic and anaerobic exercise, this training can be utilized for competitive purposes – in grappling tournaments or mixed martial arts – and exercise (burning upward of 800 calories per hour, but is absolutely invaluable for self-defense.

No mater the purpose for your training, the positive benefits of jiu jitsu far extend the physical attributes you will gain.

Gi Jiu Jitsu

Gi jiu jitsu is a form of jiu jitsu grappling that includes the use of a traditional gi jacket, pants, and belt. While working within the gi, you are able to use your training partner or opponent’s clothing to improve your own position, attain submissions, etc. Because of the added element of the gi, there are differences in grip as well as pace due to the natural friction of the gi.

No Gi Jiu Jitsu

No gi jiu jitsu is a form of jiu jitsu grappling that excludes the use of the traditional uniform. Instead, students and competitors commonly wear grappling/compression shorts or spats/tights, and rash guards or shirts. Unlike in the gi, in no gi grappling you are not permitted to grip, grab or otherwise use your training partner or opponent’s clothing.

The 10 Commandments of Jiu Jitsu

1. Thou shalt respect EVERYONE.

  1. Thou shalt NOT ignore the instructor. Listen and learn – it’s why we’re here.
  2. Thou shalt keep off the mat if thou art sick – keep your partners healthy.
  1. Thou shalt NOT be a mat bully. (Remember: there is always someone bigger and stronger than you.)
  2. Thou shalt NOT go barefoot in the bathroom and thou shalt NOT wear shoes on the mats.
  1. Thou shalt invest in nail clippers. If you are not a majestic eagle, clip your talons.
  2. Thou shalt NOT be afraid to tap! Thou shalt tap early and often – learning is the goal, injury is the enemy.
  1. Thou shalt SHOW HEART and not give up when you’re in a tough spot.
  2. Thou shalt wash thy gi after EVERY class. We repeat: EVERY class.
  3. Thou shalt NOT celebrate after tapping a partner.
